wants security for israel. you obviously want security for israel. improved conditions for the palestinians in gaza. and eventually a comprehensive peace. but the improved conditions for palestinians in gaza, is israel under -- if there were security, if there was a period of calm prepared to improve the lives of the million plus palestinians who are struggling in gaza? what are you prepared to do to improve their condition? >> here you have to put cause and effect in the right sequence. because when we pulled out of the gaza strip in 2005 and we took down all our settlements, you were here, you covered that story, wolf. the hope was we pull out of gaza and then israel and gaza can have a new set of relationships, there can be trade and tourism and people go back and forth. we impose restrictions only because of the hostility, because of the violence, because of the missiles after hamas took over. >> so if the missiles and the rockets stop, will you take steps to improve the lives of the palestinians in gaza? >> we've already been taking those steps.

more rockets coming into israel. since saturday more than 130 rockets have come into israel. some of those blasted away by the iron dome, but some of those have landed injuring about a dozen israelis. we also know that there are four soldiers who have been injured, two of them severely. that happened just a couple of days ago. this is a real tension that's ratcheted up. we also know that egypt has removed its ambassador to israel. and we're getting that information just as we speak. there are a lot of rumors right now but we talked directly to the military spokeswoman who told us that israel is considering whether or not it will perform a ground war in gaza. right now they are holding off, but they are bringing reservists in just to be prepared in case they think that a ground war is necessary. for now we're hearing that there are continued air strikes. and there is some action from the mediterranean just off of gaza where israeli warships are shooting into gaza. we are also hearing from the militants inside gaza saying they have also targeted the israe israeli naval ships an

hamas and israel going on. it seemed mahmoud abbas becoming an influential figure here in the palestinian territories. a lot of people here also in the west bank that said hamas was essentially the one that stands up to israel. mahmoud abbas was seen as very weak. if you look at the several few days before this u.n. bid in the run up to all this, his poll numbers have really increased. he has gotten a lot more popular here in the palestinian territory. so, certainly, in many ways, this speech that he gave before that vote was a make or break moment for mahmoud abbas. it seems as though he carried some momentum from that. it's unclear, however, wolf, how long that is going to last. because tomorrow people are going to wake up and they're going to notice not much is going to change. the actual status of the palestinian territories really hasn't changed very much on the ground. that is something that israel has been saying, as well. they say in the end, this is a piece of paper. however, this is by no means that s
